One Brooklyn lawmaker celebrated International Women’s Day by hiring a female chief of staff and promoting another employee to be second-in-command.

Councilmember Carlos Menchaca (D-Sunset Park-Red Hook) announced on Wednesday that Veronica Piedra Leon will now serve as his chief of staff and that Adriana L. Garcia is his new deputy chief of staff for policy and budget.

Menchaca, who called Piedra Leon and Garcia “two amazing women,” made his announcement on Wednesday on International Women’s Day, a day designed to celebrate the accomplishments of women.

Both Piedra Leon and Garcia have extensive experience dealing with government issues, according to Menchaca.

“Veronica has an impressive background in labor and workforce development and has advocated for immigrant rights through various educational and social initiatives. Adriana came to us from the legal field where she focused on the civil and constitutional rights of immigrants and on civil rights issues in housing and employment,” Menchaca said in a statement.

Garcia formerly served as director of policy and budget in Menchaca’s office.

The Councilmember and former Chief of Staff David Estrada will now serve as director of communications. “I thank David for his prudent guidance and strong commitment to this office as we continue to grow,” Menchaca stated.

International Women’s Day also marked A Day Without Women, a general strike called by the organizers of the Women’s March on Washington, a protest demonstration against President Donald Trump that drew an estimated 500,000 marchers to the nation’s capital on Jan. 21, the day after Trump was inaugurated.

The Jan. 21 event spawned similar protests in cities across the country and around the world, including a march in New York that attracted 400,000 participants.

A Day Without Women was held on Wednesday to bring attention to the important roles females play in society and to call for economic equality for women, organizers said.

One of the largest demonstrations took place outside Trump International Hotel in Columbus Circle, where several protesters, including Linda Sarsour of Bay Ridge, one of the Women’s March on Washington organizers, were arrested for disorderly conduct after allegedly trying to block traffic.
