Gloria Steinem is inaugural speaker at Senesh School series

Gloria Steinem is coming to Brooklyn. The feminist icon will be the inaugural speaker for the new Michael H. Steinhardt Speaker Series at the Hannah Senesh Community Day School in Carroll Gardens on March 27.

“Gloria Steinem’s work as a feminist, activist and writer represents our school’s core values,” Head of School Nicole Nash said in a statement. “She has long inspired our parents and community members. It is especially meaningful to connect her great accomplishments to her underlying Jewish values and the work we do at Senesh.”

Hannah Senesh Community Day School is a progressive, independent K-8 Jewish day school located at 342 Smith St. Its students are drawn from a diversity of Jewish backgrounds.

With the support of philanthropist Michael Steinhardt, Senesh is launching the speaker series to highlight the connection between timeless Jewish values and modern professional accomplishments.

Steinhardt, a highly respected money manager, closed his pioneering hedge fund two decades ago to focus on his passion of transforming and revitalizing people on the margins of American Jewish life.

Michael Steinhardt and his wife Judy have been important leaders in Jewish philanthropy, according to officials at Senesh. The couple founded the Steinhardt Foundation for Jewish Life, an organization that seeks to revitalize Jewish identity through educational and cultural initiatives designed to spark a modern Jewish renaissance and to support Hebrew and Jewish literacy.

Steinem’s lifetime of campaigning for gender equality and human rights epitomizes the connection between Jewish values and accomplishments, according to a statement issued by officials at Senesh.

The new series, called Conversations@Senesh, will feature leaders from all areas of public life whose careers embody the school’s values. Speakers will share the stories of their success and will reflect on the importance of values. The themes that emerge from these talks will inspire students and families in the school’s thriving Brooklyn neighborhood and beyond, school officials predicted.

The inaugural event will take place at the school and will include a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. followed by a moderated conversation at 7 p.m. between Steinem and journalist Virginia Heffernan, who is a Senesh parent. The evening will conclude with a private dinner reception.

The event is sold out, according to the school’s website. The event will be live-streamed on Facebook.

Gloria Steinem is a writer, lecturer, political activist and feminist organizer. She travels in this and other countries as an organizer and lecturer and is a frequent media spokeswoman on issues of equality. She lives in New York City.
