ON THIS DAY IN 1954, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Operators Rap Law to Permit Smaller Taxis.”

The article focused on a proposed taxi law that was attracting a host of critics.

“[The Brooklyn cabbie] not only attacked the new law, saying the front-seat rider provision would ‘encourage criminals,’ but also urged additional protection for drivers by having the glass partition between front and back seats increased in size so as to give riders only enough room to put one hand through to pay fares,” the Eagle reported.

THE BROOKLYN HISTORICAL SOCIETY (BHS) WILL HOST “BOOK TALK: JOHN STRAUSBAUGH on ‘City of Sedition: The History of New York City During the Civil War’” tonight at 6:30 p.m. Strausbaugh will discuss his most recent book, which paints a vivid picture of Civil War-era New York City as a place of extremes —where war heroes and draft resisters, abolitionists and slavery proponents, Lincoln supporters and anti-war protesters all coexisted. He reveals the schismatic role that New York City played in this tumultuous conflict. For more information, visit brooklynhistory.org.
