Dyker resident dies after being hit by train at 86th Street station in Bay Ridge

A Dyker Heights resident is believed to have committed suicide on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 11 by jumping in front of an R train at the 86^th Street station in Bay Ridge.

A police source told this paper that the man, 49, had been going through “some bad times.”

According to the source, the man had three children.

At around 1 p.m., the source said, eyewitnesses saw the man jump in front of a train. He was taken to NYU Lutheran Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

“Thoughts and prayers are with the MTA conductor and individual involved in incident today at the 86th St. R train station in Bay Ridge,” noted City Councilmember Vincent Gentile on Facebook, a sentiment echoed by many.

“So sad heard all the sirens. Then all the people at the 95th St, stop for the bus – knew something was up. Prayers for man and conductor,” agreed Facebook user Virginia Pisaniello, one of many who added her thoughts in response to Gentile’s post.

As a result of the incident, service on the R line between 95^th and 59^th Streets was suspended in both directions, but was restored by later in the afternoon.
