The Other Side Winterfest Festival at Packer on Saturday
Weekend fun in Brooklyn Heights
The Other Side’s third annual Winterfest on Saturday, Dec. 3, brings together local students performing pieces from their recent theatrical exchanges with girls in India, along with Abby Dobson, 2016 Artist-in-Residence with the African American Policy Forum, and Bandana Kumari, a student from India.
The event takes place at Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights at 170 Joralemon St. from 3 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance / $25 at the door.
Dobson, a 2014 BET Hip Hop Award Nominee for Best Impact Song, will perform “Say Her Name,” a tribute to black women lost to state and non-state violence.
The Other Side is a cross-cultural exchange of dramatic storytelling between girls from India and the U.S. It’s “like pen pals. But with theatre,” said Melanie Closs, program director and founder of The Other Side Intercultural Theatre (www.theothersidenyc.org). Through “drama exchange,” girls develop strong friendships and learn to stand up for themselves and each other.
The Festival will include a silent auction and other opportunities to donate. (Auction items including a private sailing trip on the Long Island Sound and tickets to see Cirque de Soleil’s “Paramour.”) Free food and beverages will be provided.
According to Closs, “It’s important to have events like this so our participants can feel the support of their neighbors, and also witness inspiring performances by other female activists. It is our hope that by creating improved global citizens, encouraging advocacy and artistry, and promoting a more supportive female environment, we will see our participants lead all of our communities to a better future. Join us on Saturday to celebrate these girls!”
