Brooklyn judges honored at the National Association of Women Judges annual conference

Brooklyn and New York judges attending the October 2016 National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ) Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington included Hon. Cheryl J. Gonzales, Hon. Marguerite Grays, Hon. Debra James, Hon. Tanya R. Kennedy, Hon. Kathy J. King, Hon. Patricia LaFreniere, Hon. Carole Levy, Hon. Enedina Pilar Sanchez, Hon. Ruth Shillingford, Hon. Debra Silber, Hon. Delores Thomas, Hon. Sally Unger and Hon. Betty J. Williams.

Kennedy (NY State Supreme Court, NY County) and Justice King (NY State Supreme Court, Kings County) were elected to NAWJ president-elect and secretary, respectively, for the 2016-2017 terms. King is the president of the NY chapter of NAWJ and Kennedy is the Treasurer Emeritus of NAWJ.

Gonzales was the recipient of the NAWJ 2016 Mattie Belle Davis Award, presented by NAWJ President Hon. Lisa S. Walsh. The award recognizes an NAWJ member who has gone above and beyond his or her role as member and volunteer to help make a difference in the organization in furthering NAWJ’s mission.

Gonzales shared this award with New York State Supreme Court Justice Williams and Federal Administrative Law Judge Murray, co-chairs of the NAWJ Women in Prison Committee. Gonzales, NAWJ District 2 director (NY, CT, VT) is the Housing Court’s supervising judge for the Civil Court of the city of New York, Kings County.

The NAWJ 2017 mid-year conference will be held in Los Angeles. The annual conferences will be held in Atlanta on Oct.11-15, 2017 and in San Antonio on Oct. 3-7, 2018.
