Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 252nd day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1940, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Schools to Receive 1,128,000 Children.”

The article focused on the more than 1 million children citywide who were beginning a new school year.

“The number of boys and girls enrolled in the city schools will be some 20,000 smaller than a year ago and there are four more schools to receive them,” the Eagle reported. “There will be about 16,000 new students in Brooklyn meeting their first teacher today and 40,000 throughout the city.”

THE OPRAH Winfrey Show” premiered on this day in 1986. The daytime talk show was the top-rated talk show for years and was also the first of its kind to be hosted by an African-American woman, Oprah Winfrey. Her show was taped in front of a studio audience who were solicited for their questions and feedback. In the mid-1990s, fed up with the plethora of trashy talk shows that had sprung up everywhere, Winfrey decided to upgrade the quality of topics that her show presented. Her book club feature was a popular element of her show, and chosen books usually became bestsellers. The show finished its run on May 25, 2011.
