Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 225th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1935, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Grandmother, to Be Deported, Fights for Custody of Girl, 7.”

The article focused on a custody and deportation case at the Brooklyn Supreme Court.

“[Rita’s] maternal grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Sermol … who is slated for deportation to Latvia, and her aunt, Mrs. Emily Zuker of Lynn, Massachusetts, are battling for the child’s custody,” the Eagle reported. “Rita spent a few minutes before Justice Thomas C. Kadien in the Brooklyn Supreme Court today, showing no emotion about the future.”
