Massachusetts’ all-Democratic congressional delegation is calling on U.S. House Science Committee Chairman Lamar Smith to drop subpoenas targeting Attorneys General Maura Healey of Massachusetts and Eric Schneiderman of New York.

The Texas Republican is seeking records about Healey’s and Schneiderman’s investigations into whether Exxon Mobil misled investors about man-made climate change.

Healey and Schneiderman, both Democrats, have refused to comply with the subpoenas.

In a letter dated Wednesday, the delegation called the subpoenas an “unprecedented, invalid exercise of Congressional authority” that “violate the principle of state sovereignty.”

The delegation said they could find no other example in U.S. history of a congressional panel subpoenaing state attorneys general working in their official capacity to investigate possible state law violations.

Smith has accused Healey and Schneiderman of chilling scientific free speech.
