Online finance school opens branch in downtown Brooklyn

A school that teaches students financial literacy and investment strategies is investing in Downtown Brooklyn.

The Online Trading Academy has opened a new education center at 2 Hanson Place, across the street from Barclays Center.

The academy, which was established in 1997, is a private school that offers students the chance to study finances in a hands-on, learn-by-doing classroom setting that is supplemented by online resources, according to a press release issued by the company.

The school has a professional trader course in which students learn trading skills and then practice trading live, in the classroom, without paying commissions or risking their own capital. The company has also recently added real estate investing courses.

The Hanson Place center is the academy’s 39th campus. The Brooklyn center joins other New York area campuses on Long Island and in Ridgefield Park, N.J. It replaces a location at 42 Broadway in Manhattan.

Among the cities with Online Trading Academy centers are Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Chicago, Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Dallas, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

“Brooklyn is the most populous of New York’s five boroughs and home to an increasing number of financial institutions,” Sam Seiden, the academy’s chief education officer, said in a statement. “It’s also growing as a cultural destination and a desirable place to live. This new location will be more accessible to all of our students throughout New York City and that’s why we’ve added our newest campus here.”

Seiden said the Hanson Place site was selected partly because of its accessibility to public transportation.

The Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center station, the busiest subway station in Brooklyn, also serves the Long Island Rail Road. “We’re easy to access from any point in the Greater New York area, and there is a lot to do after class once you get here,” he stated.
