A new stage musical based on Garry Marshall’s 1984 movie “The Flamingo Kid” is hoping to cha-cha to Broadway by 2018.

The show will feature book and lyrics by Tony winner Robert L. Freedman (“A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder”) and music by Scott Frankel (“War Paint”), producers Bob Israel and Larry Hirschhorn said Thursday.

The coming-of-age story that starred Matt Dillon in the film is about a young man from Brooklyn who gets a job at a private beach club for well-to-do Long Islanders. Hirschhorn called it “a valentine to the shimmering beach clubs of a bygone era.”
