Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 209th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1885, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “O’Shea, the Wife Murderer, Sent up for Life.”

The article focused on the sentencing of Thomas O’Shea, also known as the Piper.

“Judge Moore, after briefly recapitulating the various steps taken in O’Shea’s case since the commission of the murder, concluded with, ‘There is but one punishment prescribed by the law for such crimes as that with which you are charged… You must pass the remainder of your life within the state prison of Sing Sing,’” the Eagle reported. “O’Shea walked back to the pen without exhibiting the least trace of emotion.”

“Life is made up of small pleasures. Happiness is made up of those tiny successes. The big ones come too infrequently. And if you don’t collect all these tiny successes, the big ones don’t really mean anything.” — Norman Lear, who was born on this day in 1922.
