Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 174th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1872, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “The Bridge. How the Great Work Goes On.”

The article focused on the annual reports on the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge.

“These [feats] have all been overcome, and when we see the New York tower rising above the waters of the East River this summer, the people of the two cities will acquire increased confidence in the early realization of a work so essential to their mutual prosperity,” the Eagle reported.

BROOKLYN BRIDGE Park will host a Walt Whitman Tour tonight at 6:30 p.m., beginning at the Pier 1 entrance. Whitman scholar and NYU Professor Karen Karbiener will lead the tour, which focuses on the importance of the Brooklyn waterfront to the famous writer. THE GRAND ST. STOMPERS will perform as part of the Plaza Swing Series at the Brooklyn Public Library tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Central branch. The New Orleans-style hot jazz band revives and refreshes the music of the 1920s onward for today’s listeners, swing dancers and music fans. The octet features singer Martina DaSilva.
