Bishop Kearney grads boast $29 million in scholarships

The Bishop Kearney High School’s Class of 2016 earned an impressive $29 million in college scholarships, according to school officials, who said 100 percent of the graduates will go on to colleges and universities.

Students at the all-girls Catholic School at 2202 60th St. in Bensonhurst earned acceptance to such schools as Johns Hopkins University, the University of Notre Dame, Boston College, New York University, Fordham University and Macaulay Honors College at the City University of New York.

Bishop Kearney High School’s 51st Commencement Exercises took place on June 4 at Our Lady of Angels Church in Bay Ridge.

The General Excellence Award was won by Johann Sullivan, who will be attending Quinnipiac University in the fall.

Therese Gallagher won the Catholic Studies Award. She will be going to St. John’s University.

The award winners in each subject area were Annaliese Tucci (English), Amanda Potter (music), Carie Guan (art), Jacqueline Gallagher (Italian), Sunhee Nduwimana (Spanish), Brianna Gelsomini (mathematics), Maureen DeGregorio (physical education), Emily Luong (science) and Samantha Cardin (social studies).

The commencement speaker, humanitarian Carolyn Makinson, talked to the graduates about finding her way and the moment she realized she could change the world. She encouraged them to continue being of service to others.

Makinson, a native of Great Britain, is the former executive director of the International Rescue Committee. She also served as the executive director of the Women’s Refugee Commission and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
