Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 167th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1924, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Sing Sing Prisoner Missing in Check-Up; General Alarm Out.”

The article focused on a Brooklyn man who was serving a sentence for grand larceny and escaped from the jail.

“Immediately upon the discovery of Speruto’s disappearance the authorities at Sing Sing were notified and Warden Lewis E. Lawes sent out a general alarm to the state police and also all local police,” the Eagle reported. “Searching parties were at once organized and set out to scour the countryside.”

THE MAGNA CARTA was sealed on this day in 1215. King John of England sealed the document “in the meadow called Ronimed between Windsor and Staines on the 15th day of June in the 17th year of our reign.” Continually reinterpreted, the Magna Carta influenced the rise of England’s constitutional monarchy and lent historical weight to 18th-century ideas about inalienable natural laws. It is still invoked popularly and in jurisprudence as a symbol of the written law’s power to subdue tyranny. Four original copies of the 1215 charter survive.
