Brooklyn Volunteer Lawyers Project to host Annual Fundraising Gala

The Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) will host its annual fundraising gala at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Wednesday, May 11, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at BAM (30 Lafayette Ave.).  

Since 1990, the VLP has assisted tens of thousands of Brooklyn residents with quality legal services. The organization has worked to make the legal system accessible to low-income Brooklyn residents by offering them pro bono access to some of the best attorneys in the borough.

The VLP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing civil legal assistance to those Brooklyn residents who need it most.  It is also one of the only legal services organizations operated boroughwide in Brooklyn.

 

This year’s gala co-chairs are:

Carlo A. Scissura, president and CE0, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce

Samuel W. Seymour, partner, Sullivan & Cromwell LLP

Betty A. Whelchel, head of policy and regulatory relations, BNP Paribas

Honorary chair is Stephen P. Younger, Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP.

 

This year’s honorees are:

Frank V. Carone, Esq., executive partner, Abrams Fensterman

Carone was raised in Brooklyn, earned his bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University and received his Juris Doctor at Brooklyn Law School. Carone was appointed by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg to the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission.

 

Steven M. Cohen, chief administrative officer and general counsel, MacAndrews & Forbes

Cohen earned his bachelor’s degree from New York University and received his Juris Doctor the University of Pennsylvania. Cohen served as secretary to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Hon. Jonathan Lippman, former chief judge, State of New York; counsel, Latham & Watkins LLP

Lippman was appointed by then-Gov. David Patterson to serve as chief judge of the New York Court of Appeals from 2009 through 2015. Prior to that, Lippman was appointed by then-Gov. Elliot Spitzer as presiding justice of the First Judicial Department.  Lippman received his bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctor degree from NYU.

  • Kevin M. McDonough, Latham & Watkins LLP
