Thousands turned out for the 21st annual Good Friday Procession across the Brooklyn Bridge on March 25.

The Roman Catholic movement Communion and Liberation sponsors this annual international event that has, since 1996, included the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York spoke at Good Friday devotionals, where the First Station of the Cross was prayed inside St. James Cathedral-Basilica on Jay Street. Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio accompanied Cardinal Dolan as they led the procession up Jay Street, across Tillary Street and to the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. Before departing the procession at this point, Cardinal Dolan spoke briefly to reporters.

“Everyone seems to be carrying a cross these days,” he said. Reflecting on this past week’s terror attacks in Belgium and praying for the victims and their families, Cardinal Dolan said, “This is the purpose of Good Friday. We carry our crosses together. Jesus died for our sorrows.”

The Second Station of the Cross was prayed on the Brooklyn Bridge platform near the Brooklyn-side tower. The Third and Fourth stations were prayed at City Hall Park and 9/11 Memorial Plaza, respectively. The procession concluded with the Fifth Station at St. Peter’s Church on Barclay Street.

Richard Vega, a New York member of Communion and Liberation, and John Bartlett, a firefighter with Engine 167 in Staten Island, were the cross bearers.
