72nd Precinct Police Beat: Burglar steals nearly $18,000 of jewelry and designer shoes

Between Wednesday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 22, the 72nd Precinct received reports of two burglaries, two assaults and one case of criminal mischief. The 72nd Precinct serves Sunset Park, Greenwood Heights and South Park Slope.

BURGLAR WITH GOOD TASTE

A pair of diamond watches, Tiffany necklaces and bracelets, and Gucci shoes were among the haul when a burglar broke into an apartment near Eighth Avenue and 16th Street on Friday, March 18 between 12 and 6:30 p.m. The resident, a 45-year-old woman, discovered the theft when she returned home. The burglar had ransacked both her and her son’s bedrooms. The stolen property was worth approximately $18,000 .

UNFRIENDLY WALK

A woman was assaulted while walking with a friend to another friend’s house on Tuesday, March 22 at around 4:10 a.m. Cops say an Asian man in his twenties came from behind and struck the victim in the head with an unknown object before fleeing the scene.

The victim was taken to NYU Lutheran Medical Center.

TIRE SLASHER

Police say that a 53-year-old woman parked her car near Fifth Avenue and 53rd Street on Wednesday, March 16 at approximately 10 a.m. When she returned to her car on Sunday, March 20 at 9 a.m., she discovered that a perp had slashed the front and rear tires. The victim and a witness claim that the victim has an ongoing case with a neighbor. Cops also say that the incident may have been recorded.

THANK YOU FOR SMOKING

On Sunday, March 20 at approximately 5:15 a.m., a 29-year-old woman was struck in her left arm with a glass bottle thrown by a 24-year-old Hispanic man. The assault, which occurred in an apartment complex at Fifth Avenue and 49th Street, started during an argument in the hallway regarding cigarette smoke coming from the victim’s apartment building.

The alleged assailant was arrested on assault charges.

WITNESSED BURGLARY

A 34-year-old Asian man returned to his home on Fifth Avenue and 58th Street on Saturday, March 19 at approximately 3:20 a.m. to find that his place had been burglarized. A 32-year-old Hispanic woman witnessed the burglar enter through the front door, steal the victim’s property and flee the scene before the witness could confront her.

The suspect, a 33-year-old Hispanic woman, has been arrested on burglary charges.
