Dr. Sebron Harrison recently joined the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at New York Methodist Hospital (NYM) as chief of thoracic surgery.

Board-certified in both surgery and thoracic surgery, Harrison specializes in traditional and minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of cancer and benign diseases in and around the lungs and esophagus.

“I was drawn to thoracic surgery because of my interest in lung cancer treatment,” said Harrison. “A lot of people don’t realize that lung cancer kills nearly twice as many people as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer and ovarian cancer combined.

“A key factor in the disease’s high mortality rate is the late stage of diagnosis for the majority of patients. I was fortunate to receive training from world-class thoracic surgeons, and wanted to join the field and do my part to help patients whose lives have been turned upside down by this disease,” he said.

Harrison graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Alabama (UAB) at Birmingham. During his training, Harrison was honored with the UAB General Surgery Humanitarian Award and UAB General Surgery Teaching Award, and was also lauded as his program’s most outstanding chief resident.

After completing a second residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, Harrison joined the faculty of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he served as an attending thoracic surgeon before joining NYM.

Procedures Harrison performs include video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors, as well as minimally invasive surgery for pneumothorax (collapsed lungs), pleural space effusions (water in the lungs) and other conditions.

“Dr. Harrison has distinguished himself as a talented physician with a passion for helping patients confront challenging diagnoses,” said Dr. Robert Tranbaugh, NYM’s chairman of cardiothoracic surgery. “We are delighted that he has joined the hospital’s outstanding lineup of surgeons.”
