Officials react to conviction in stairwell shooting case

Officials and activists in New York are reacting to the manslaughter conviction of Officer Peter Liang, who shot an unarmed man in a darkened public housing stairwell. Here are some of their comments:
___
“The death of Akai Gurley was a tragedy. The jury has now spoken, and we respect its decision. We hope today’s outcome brings some closure to the Gurley family after this painful event.” — Mayor Bill de Blasio.
___
“We are very disappointed in the verdict and believe that the jury came to an absolutely wrong decision. This bad verdict will have a chilling effect on police officers across the city because it criminalizes a tragic accident.” — Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch.
___
“Hopefully this verdict brings some comfort to the Gurley family and gives hope to the others who continue to seek justice for police misconduct. …This verdict is a signal that, at least in this case, there are consequences for an officer’s actions.” — the Rev. Al Sharpton.
___
“I remain greatly concerned that Police Officer Peter Liang has been made a scapegoat for the failings of many others in government which are a much more real cause to this tragic death.” — State Assemblyman William Colton.
___
“Today, the criminal justice system worked for Akai Gurley’s family and community. Akai was a New Yorker who had his whole life ahead of him and I hope today’s verdict brings some measure of closure to his loved ones.” — City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
___
“Regardless of the verdict in the fatal shooting of Akai Gurley, it is a somber moment for all New Yorkers, a tragedy that impacts many of our communities on a very personal level.” — Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams.
