Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 36th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1913, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Blow Open a Safe, but Miss Diamonds.”

The article focused on a gang of gloved safeblowers who attempted to rob a large retail and office building.

“From the safe they had taken out about 75 watches, valued at about $500, although some of the timepieces bearing the name of the jeweler were found in a wastebasket in the lavatory on the same floor,” the Eagle reported. “Although the outside door of the safe had been blown clean off its hinges, the inside steel compartment, where about $2,000 worth of diamonds was kept, had not been touched.”
