Generally Speaking: Brooklyn Cathedral Club to celebrate 116th anniversary
The Cathedral Club of Brooklyn, the charitable Catholic lay organization which was founded in 1900, will be celebrating its 116th anniversary at its anniversary dinner in the West Side Ballroom of the New York Marriott Marquis on Broadway in Manhattan on February 4 at 6 p.m.
This year’s guest of honor will be Donald DeCarlo, chairperson of the Amtrust International Underwriters Group. DeCarlo, a well-known attorney, is the former vice chair and commissioner of the New York State Insurance Fund.
Former New York State Assemblymember and now New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli will be the keynote speaker. Monsignors Jamie Gigantiello and Kieran Harrington are the honorary dinner chairpeople. The dinner co-chairs are Marianne Bertuna, Antonio Biondi, Mark Cipolla, Martin Cottingham, Judge Patricia DiMango, Craig Eaton, John Heyer II and James McHugh. The Master of Ceremonies will be Q104.3 FM Radio host Jim Kerr.
Vincent LeVien is the club president, and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, the head of the Brooklyn Catholic Diocese, is the club’s spiritual director. Among the elected officials likely to grace the large dais for this celebratory bash are State Senator Marty Golden, U.S. Representative Daniel Donovan, City Councilmembers Vincent Gentile and Eric Ulrich, Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis and several members of the New York State judiciary.

NYU Lutheran Senior Therapist Lauren Calabrese was the guest speaker at the December meeting of the Bay Ridge AARP. She discussed how to prevent falls in the home and when walking outside. Calabrese also demonstrated the proper way to get in and out on the passenger side in the front seat of a car or from the rear seats of a taxi, to prevent tripping or slipping. For the benefit of the older members of her audience, she demonstrated how to walk with a cane, how to size it properly and the use of two types of walkers.
