The Brooklyn Rugby men’s team continued their strong play in the Empire Geographic Union – NYC Division this Saturday, defeating New York Rugby Club (NYC) 27-24, en route to their fifth victory in a row. The Brooklyn women’s team fell 27-7 to Portland after making the trip up to Maine.

On the men’s side, Brooklyn was looking to avenge their only loss of the season, which came against NYRC back in Week 3. However it was New York that struck first less than ten minutes into the first half with the game’s first try, putting them up 5-0. Brooklyn responded later in the half after Johnny Brennan evened the score with a try. But New York answered right back one minute later with a try and conversion to go up 12-5. Brooklyn then scored two unanswered tries from Johnny Gearity and Ben “Bino” Deschamps to end the first half and go into the break leading 15-12.

In the second half, Brooklyn captain Mike Reilly extended the lead to 20-12 with the team’s fourth try of the day. New York then trimmed its deficit to 20-17 after adding its third try of the day, but missing on the conversion. Five minutes later, Chris Petri added a fifth try for Brooklyn, putting the team up 27-17 after James Brodribb added the conversion. New York kept it close, adding another try in the final ten minutes to make the score 27-24, but that’s where the score would remain as the final whistle blew, giving Brooklyn their seventh win of the season and their fifth in a row.

Portland came out hard, as they opened up a 20-0 lead in the first half on their home field.

In the second half, Jess Mendez of Brooklyn scored the team’s lone try of the match, with Kyla Maxwell adding the conversion. Portland added one more try in the second half, giving them a 27-7 victory over Brooklyn.
