The Thomas J. Volpe Lecture Series will welcome Steve Hindy, co-Founder of the Brooklyn Brewery, for the second of three lectures during the 2015-16 school year on Monday, Nov. 16 at 12:30 p.m. in the St. Francis College Founders Hall (180 Remsen St.).

When the first bottles of Brooklyn Lager were brewed in 1988, it put Hindy at the forefront of Brooklyn’s re-emergence as a worldwide destination for culture, businesses and living. Now, the Brooklyn Brewery is one of America’s top 20 breweries.

Hindy joins Becky Hammon, who spoke at St. Francis College on Sept. 21, and Glenn Adamson, director of the Museum of Arts and Design, who will speak on Feb. 29, 2016 as the three guests of the Volpe Lecture Series this school year.

A former journalist, Hindy became interested in home-brewing while serving as a Beirut-based Middle East Correspondent for the Associated Press. After returning to the States as Newsday’s assistant foreign editor in 1988, he began brewing his own beer and persuaded his neighbor, banker Tom Potter, that they should quit their jobs and start a brewery.

Hindy is a member of the board of directors of the Beer Institute and the Brewers Association. He is a director of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Alliance, chairman of the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn, former chair of Brooklyn’s Tourism Consortium and a former member of Community Board 1. Hindy also serves on the Board of Transportation Alternatives and the Alcohol Beverage Manufacturer’s Research Foundation. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Ellen, principal of Intermediate School 89 in Manhattan. With Potter, Hindy co-authored “Beer School: Bottling Success at the Brooklyn Brewery” (John Wiley & Sons), with a forward by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg. His latest book, “The Craft Beer Revolution: How a Band of Microbrewers Are Transforming the World’s Favorite Drink,” chronicles the rise of the craft beer industry.

The lecture series is funded through a generous gift from Thomas J. Volpe, chairman emeritus of the St. Francis College board of trustees and a former senior vice president of financial operations for the Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc.

Guest speakers offer an international perspective in a variety of fields; from business leaders to world leaders. Past speakers include astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson (“Cosmos”), Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry’s), authors Frank Bruni (New York Times), Pete Hamill (“Snow in August”), E.L. Doctorow (“Ragtime”) and Salman Rushdie (“Midnight’s Children”), Russell Simmons (Def Jam), Mariane Pearl (wife of slain reporter Daniel Pearl), Paul Rusesabagina (the real Hotel Rwanda hero), Lech Walesa (former President of Poland, Nobel Prize winner) and George Mitchell (former U.S. Senator, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, baseball steroids report).

The event is free and open to the public and tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.
