The festival, held for the first nine days of the ninth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, is a ceremony to welcome the Nine Emperor Gods believed to live in the stars in heaven under the reign of “Thien Hou,” or the Queen of Heaven, who brings good fortune, longevity and good health.\

VIRGINIA — Re-enactors Take Roles Seriously: Confederate troops fire upon the Union troops during a re-enactment of the Civil War Battle of Cedar Creek on Sunday at the Cedar Creek battlefield just south of Middletown. The 151st anniversary commemoration weekend was hosted by the Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park.

MEXICO CITY — Parade Features Fantasy: A giant alebrije is paraded through the city on Saturday. Alebrijes are colorful sculptures that combine components of different animals to create a unique fantastical creature. The term was penned by local folk artist Pedro Linares who originated the art form in the 1930s based on creatures he dreamt about during a severe illness, and which he began creating after his recovery.
