Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 266th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1915, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Mayor Orders Cut in Police Budget.”

The article focused on then-Mayor John Mitchel making cuts for the 1916 budget.

“Of all the city departments, that of the police forms the largest single item in the budget,” the Eagle reported. “It represents almost one-tenth of the total amount that must be raised by taxation… [the mayor] believes Police Commissioner Woods can effect substantial savings in 1916 outside of the uniformed force.”
