New board voted in at Cobble Hill Association after leadership brouhaha

Following the resignation of long-time leader Roy Sloane after two dozen members threatened to depose him, last Thursday a large crowd gathered in Cobble Hill to vote on a new line up of officers for the Cobble Hill Association’s (CHA) executive board.

The vote follows weeks of dissention over Sloane’s governance style in the fight over development at the former Long Island College Hospital (LICH) site. Sloane has served on CHA’s board almost continuously since 1980, but dissidents called his leadership non-inclusive and disagreed with his strategy of engaging in dialogue developer Fortis Property Group to shape the coming development architecturally, rather than tackling the issue from economic, legal and architectural angles.

Several positions had remained unfilled over the past few months as other board members moved or resigned. With massive development looming at the former Long Island College Hospital (LICH) site, CHA said local residents did not want any lapse in leadership positions.

The seven members standing for positions on the board were presented as a slate and were voted in by a large majority. Thursday’s meeting was conducted by the two remaining board members — Laurel Burr and Daniel Arbeeny, who were voted in as president and second vice president.

Besides incumbents Burr and Arbeeny, the new board members include First Vice President Adrian (Buzz) Doherty; Treasurer Ezana Bocresion; Membership Secretary Amy Breedlove; Corresponding Secretary Kathryn Yatrakis and Recording Secretary Laurie Maurer.

Treasurer Arbeeny said he hopes CHA will be bring a “broad chorus” of voices to planning for the LICH development and dealing with its developer Fortis Property Group. He says the new board will contribute expertise in finance, architectural and legal issues and will allow for more community involvement.

The group was set to gather on Monday night for their first board meeting.
