ON THIS DAY IN 1936, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Drunken Cop Rams Wagon, Hurls Driver Off Bridge to Death.”
The article focused on a police officer causing the death of another driver in an automobile and horse-drawn truck accident on the Williamsburg Bridge.
“Charles Schlanger… was hurled 100 feet to his death,” the Eagle reported. “The policeman was pronounced intoxicated and unfit for duty.”
