The Investors Bank Bike 4 Friendship men’s cycling team completed its 3,100-mile, coast-to-coast fundraising trek by members carrying their bikes into the Atlantic Ocean off Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach on Sunday, Aug. 9. The cyclists began the journey by leaving from the beach in San Diego, California, on June 28. Pedaling between 90 to 120 miles a day, the grueling and inspiring journey included crossing the desert by riding after midnight, pedaling over the Rocky Mountains and getting on the bike for six days a week. The team of 11 riders (an additional cyclists joined in Ohio and rode for the last 500-plus miles) were cycling to raise $150,000 for Friendship Circle International, which has five chapters in New York City, including one in Crown Heights. The nonprofit organization assists children with special needs and their families by recruiting teen boys and girls who build caring friendships with each child. Investors Bank’s Roni Shoyfer (center of photo) is shown with the cyclists celebrating the completion of their Pacific Ocean to Atlantic Ocean quest.
