Man struck and killed while riding bicycle in Sunset

A man riding his bike was struck by a vehicle and killed on Wednesday, August 5 within the confines of the 72^nd Precinct.

According to police, 72-year-old Rigoberto Diaz was riding his bicycle near Third Avenue and 48^th Street at approximately 5:25 p.m. when he was hit by a 1995 black Chevrolet SUV operated by a 56-year-old male while traveling north bound on Third Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers observed the 72-year-old unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the roadway. EMS responded to the location and transported the male to Lutheran Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Cops say the bicyclist made a wide left turn onto Third Avenue to head south bound where he was struck. The driver remained at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
