Registration open for the 27th annual Police Officer Christopher Hoban Run

Registration for the Hoban Run, a Bay Ridge September tradition memorializing Police Officer Christopher Hoban, who gave his life in the line of duty, is now open for the public to sign up.

This year’s race, scheduled for Sunday, September 20, will mark the 27th annual Hoban Run, a tribute to the 26-year-old Hoban who lost his life in a botched drug operation in 1989 created by the Police Alumni of Xaverian High School. The organization decided to honor Hoban, their fellow officer and Xaverian alumnus, by establishing a scholarship fund to the Catholic academy in his memory.

“The Hoban Run brings together friends and family on the third Sunday in September in honor and memory of Police Officer Christopher Hoban ’80, a true Bay Ridge hero,” said Rob Oliva, chairperson of the Hoban Run Committee.

In addition to keeping alive the memory of Hoban’s personal sacrifice, the race is also the Hoban Scholarship’s main source of funding for the tuition assistance it provides to the sons of New York City police officers attending Xaverian.

“The Hoban Run usually has between 500-600 runners annually, and each year the goal is to attract more runners than the previous year,” said Erin Cicalese, a spokesperson for Xaverian.

The race, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. following an opening ceremony, starts and finishes at Xaverian High School at 71st Street and Shore Road. The course goes along the Shore Road Promenade bicycle path and returns on Third Avenue.

Aside from the featured five-mile race, Hoban’s Run offers people who are not up for a five-mile run a chance to participate in the day’s festivities by signing up for the mile-long Hoban Hat Walk. The walk isn’t scored, but the person with the best hat will receive an award at the post-race party.

Younger children will be able to take part in the day by participating in kid’s dashes once the five-mile race is over. Kids aged two to 12 can sign up, and all participants will receive a medal and t-shirt for their hard work.

After the race, walk and dashes are over, the band Head Over Heels will play at noon. Everyone is invited to hang around and enjoy some beer, barbecue and kid’s rides while the race results and awards are posted and the winners of the prize raffle and cash raffle are announced.

“The Hoban Family, Xaverian High School’s administration, the Xaverian Police Alumni Association, loyal volunteers, sponsors and runners all play critical roles in the organization of this popular event,” Oliva said. “It is a true team effort!”
