They were feeling the love.

At the last meeting of the 68th Precinct Community Council before adjourning for the summer, members of the council presented the precinct’s commanding officer and rank and file cops with cards, drawings and other materials submitted as part of the council’s Summer of Support initiative, developed to provide an outlet for those who want to thank the police and let them know that their efforts are appreciated.

“Summer of Support keeps rolling,” reported council President Ilene Sacco during the June 30 meeting, held in the Norwegian Christian Home, 1250 67th Street. “Schools are doing things. Senior centers are making banners. We are getting lots of emails. We are getting stuff from outside the community. It’s great. We know this community is super supportive of the police. When September comes, we are going to wallpaper the precinct.”

The efforts are appreciated. “I’ve read some of the stuff and it really tears at your heart, especially the children,” noted the precinct’s commanding officer, Captain Raymond Festino. “The quiet majority is pro-police, so thank you.”

For those who haven’t yet sent a message of support, or who might want to send another, Sacco has three simple words. “Keep it coming,” she urged meeting attendees.

Summer of Support will run through early October. Messages can be sent to [email protected]. There is also a Summer of Support Facebook page.
