NYU Lutheran to offer free health screenings

When is the last time you had your blood pressure checked? Or went to the dentist? NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers is making sure you will run out of excuses to have these and other medical screenings done.

National Health Center Week will take place Aug. 9-15, and to celebrate NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers will be offering free medical screenings during that week, officials announced.

NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers, a collection of small, family-oriented medical clinics throughout Brooklyn, operates under the jurisdiction of NYU Lutheran, the entity that owns NYU Lutheran Medical Center, the hospital at 150 55th St. in Sunset Park.

In April, Lutheran Medical Center and its affiliated medical groups entered into a partnership with NYU Langone Medical Center.

“Getting regular health checkups can prevent a minor issue from developing into a big problem,” Larry K. McReynolds, president of NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers, wrote in an email to the Brooklyn Eagle. “When you get screened, you are taking steps to help yourself live a longer, healthier life. During this National Health Center Week, NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers wants to help you improve your health by offering a number of completely free health screenings Aug. 11-14.”

Here is the schedule of activities around the borough for National Health Center Week:

On Aug. 11, NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers Sunset Park, located at 150 55th St., will offer free blood pressure and dental screenings, and advice on breastfeeding, child care assistance and women’s health information from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A cartoonist will also be on hand.

On Aug. 12, NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers Park Slope, at 220 13th St., will have free dental screenings and dental health education, as well as HIV testing and pregnancy testing from noon to 2 p.m.

Also on Aug. 12, blood pressure and dental screenings will be provided at the Rainbow Playground located on Sixth Avenue between 56th and 57th streets from 1-4 p.m.

NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers Park Ridge, at 6317 Fourth Ave., will offer free dental and diabetic health education, HIV testing and nutritional counseling on Aug. 13 from noon to 2 p.m.

At NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers Sunset Terrace, 514 49th St., there will be free blood pressure, body mass index and depression screenings on Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will also be HIV testing and counseling. 

NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers Caribbean-American, at 3414 Church Ave., will have free blood pressure and HIV screenings, and diabetes, HIV and hypertension education on Aug. 14 from noon to 2 p.m.

Also on Aug. 14, NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers Shore Road, at 9000 Shore Road, will offer free blood pressure and colorectal cancer screenings from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. 

In addition to the various health screenings, residents will also have the opportunity to register to vote at the NYU Lutheran locations.
