Residents of Bensonhurst, Gravesend and Coney Island will have to be on the lookout throughout the summer for signs about parking restrictions on their streets.

But there’s a good reason for the parking restrictions, according to Councilmember Mark Treyger, who said the Department of Transportation (DOT) is dispatching crews to the area to repave the streets at his request.

Treyger said he secured $400,000 in the city budget to include additional streets in the DOT’s spring-summer repaving schedule.

Treyger (D-Coney Island-Gravesend-parts of Bensonhurst) also said he worked closely with Brooklyn Transportation Commissioner Keith Bray to identify the streets across his council district that are most in need of repairs based on road conditions and traffic volume.

“These resurfacing projects will bring relief to thousands of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians who currently have to dodge potholes and crumbling pavement as they use our streets,” Treyger said in a statement.

The streets on the DOT’s schedule include: 28th Avenue from Bath Avenue to Cropsey Avenue; Cropsey Avenue from Shore Parkway to Bay Parkway; 25th Avenue from Bath Avenue to Stillwell Avenue; Avenue U from McDonald Avenue to Coney Island Avenue; 19th Avenue from 86th Street to 65th Street; 80th Street from Bay Parkway to Stillwell Avenue; West Street from Avenue Y to Shore Parkway; and West 28th Street from Neptune Avenue to the Boardwalk.

The list also includes: West 29th Street from Neptune Avenue to Mermaid Avenue; East Ninth Street from Avenue P to Coney Island Avenue; Murdock Court from West Street to Ocean Parkway; and Nixon Court from West Street to Ocean Parkway.

Some of the work has already been completed. A Friday morning visit by the Brooklyn Eagle to a section of 19th Avenue near 80th Street revealed a roadway as smooth as silk as well as freshly painted yellow lines and crosswalk markings.

The latest round of repaving projects comes after the DOT repaired several other streets in the area, including 86th Street from 18th Avenue to Stillwell Avenue and Kings Highway from McDonald Avenue to Bay Parkway.

Treyger has also asked the DOT to resurface Stillwell Avenue from Kings Highway to Harway Avenue as soon as possible.

“We have already seen great progress over the past month as 25th Avenue, 28th Avenue, Cropsey Avenue, Avenue U and other areas were repaved, and this effort will continue with additional projects across the district over the coming weeks,” he said.

The DOT will be posting notices to alert residents of parking restrictions and street closures prior to the start of each repaving project.
