After a snow-filled winter, State Senator Marty Golden and the Southwest Brooklyn Parks Task Force are offering relief with some fun in the sun with the 13th Annual Summer Concert Series. Having kicked off on Tuesday, July 7 and taking place most Tuesdays and Wednesdays until August 25, the series provides locals with the opportunity to head over to four parks to enjoy their favorite local bands.

“The bands are household names to many community members,” said Deputy Chief of Staff for Golden, John Quaglione. “Each group has a following and there’s an intimacy with the shows. It also gives the groups a chance to engage the audience. And some of the bands have played at locals’ weddings. They’ve seen them at local bars. They’re all top bands in the neighborhood. It’s a great attraction.”

The summer-long event also gives attendees the chance to enjoy the borough’s natural beauty. “People can be appreciative of what our parks are all about and enjoy music. If you don’t have kids, you may not have the opportunity to go to the park and enjoy the true beauty of the scenery. There are some beautiful areas,” Quaglione said. “People come to Marine Park, Dyker, Shore Road and Gravesend, bring chairs or a blanket and enjoy the music. These bands are worth traveling for.”

The series offers a diverse selection of genres, including cover bands, classic rock and disco. “We get good crowds every year and everyone always looks forward to it. We were getting calls as early as April for the schedule,” Quaglione added.

The 14 shows include performances by Sha Doobie, a Rolling Stones tribute band (Tuesday, July 14 at Shore Road Park), MAS Swing Band (Wednesday, July 15 at Marine Park), Frankie Marra & His Band (Tuesday, July 21 at Shore Road Park), Maybe Monday (Wednesday, July 22 at Marine Park), On a Good Run (Tuesday, July 28 at Shore Road Park), Witness (Wednesday, July 29 at Marine Park), Generation Gap (Wednesday, August 5 at Avenue U and Van Sicklen Street), Carl Thomas (Tuesday, August 11 at Dyker Park), City Sounds (Wednesday, August 12 at Marine Park), Radio Daze (Tuesday, August 18 at Shore Road Park), New York Exceptions (Wednesday, August 19 at Marine Park), The Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Parade featuring the Canny Brothers (Tuesday, August 25 at Shore Road Park)and Bobby Valli (Wednesday, August 26 at Marine Park).

“The concerts are a way to get people out of the house on a hot summer night with fellow community members and enjoy a great show,” Quaglione said. “It’s free of charge and it’s a great time.”
