NYU Lutheran, the Brooklyn hospital that became part of the NYU Langone Health System in April, is getting a new chief medical officer.

Dr. Bret Rudy, who served as vice chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at NYU Langone Medical Center, has been appointed chief medical officer at NYU Lutheran, located at 150 55th St. in Sunset Park.

Rudy will start his new job as a member of NYU Lutheran’s senior leadership team this summer, officials said.

Rudy is expected to help to enhance NYU Lutheran’s programs by focusing on patient outcomes and community health.

“I am very excited to join NYU Lutheran and to serve Brooklyn residents,” he said in a statement.

Rudy, a longtime member of the NYU Langone team, is a Board Certified pediatrician who for much of his medical career has focused on issues related to HIV in adolescents and young adults.

As chairman of the Dept. of Pediatrics, he helped the staff achieve high standards of safety and accountability, according to hospital officials, who said that NYU Langone received the Number One distinction two years in a row among 104 leading academic medical centers across the county that were included in the University HealthSystem Consortium Quality and Accountability Study.

Among the strategic moves made by Rudy was the expansion of quality initiatives for children’s services. Earlier this year, he helped to expand subspecialty services in pediatric care at NYU Lutheran, NYU Langone officials said.

NYU Langone and the former Lutheran Medical Center announced on April 1 that they were officially joining forces and that the Brooklyn medical facility would be clinically integrated into the NYU Langone system. The announcement was made after officials at both institutions had received final approval from all relevant government agencies.

Lutheran Medical Center’s name was changed to NYU Lutheran.

NYU Langone and NYU Lutheran share the same parent corporation: NYU Langone Health System.

“We are extremely excited to affiliate with the great faculty and staff at NYU Langone,” Wendy Z. Goldstein, president and CEO of NYU Lutheran, said in a statement when the agreement was announced. “This new chapter for Lutheran is an important step in delivering the highest quality care possible to one of the New York City metropolitan area’s most diverse communities.”
