ON THIS DAY IN 1913, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Tombstone Workers Are Out on Strike.”

The article focused on 650 to 700 Brooklyn and Queens tombstone workers demanding more pay.

“The tombstone makers of the cemetery regions of East New York and Queens Borough have gone on a strike,” the Eagle reported. “No epitaphs are being chiseled, and the uncut granite remains silent as to the deeds and dates of the dead.”
