ON THIS DAY in 1913, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Diamond Thieves Get $50,000 Loot from Brooklynite.”

The article focused on a thief stealing a satchel of jewels worth thousands of dollars.

“Isaac R. Theise, a jeweler … was today robbed of a satchel containing diamonds and other jewelry valued at between $40,000 and $50,000,” the Eagle reported.

ALLEN GINSBERG was born on this day in 1926. Ginsberg was a poet of the Beat Generation, most known for “Howl” and “Kaddish.” He was a recipient of the National Book Award, the Robert Frost Medal and the American Book Award. He also taught at Brooklyn College. He died in 1997.

THE FIRST WOMAN RABBI of the U.S. was ordained on this day in 1972. Sally Jane Priesand became the first U.S. woman rabbi at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in New York City.

BROOKLYN STUDENTS will speak out about gun violence, gangs and the importance of family/community through an art in historic citywide parks exhibition today starting at 9 a.m. The first event, with Park Slope School 282K addressing gun and gang violence, will take place at 9 a.m. at Washington Park. Another event will take place at 11 a.m. at Tiger Playground, with school 53K addressing the importance of family and community.

NEW YORK ROAD RUNNERS will take part in the Mighty Milers Fun Run today at 10 a.m. at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island as part of National Running Day. At least five Brooklyn schools will be participating.
