SKETCHES OF COURT: Suit against Health & Hospital Corp. settled in Brooklyn
In this courtroom sketch, Hon. Gloria Dabiri listens as plaintiff’s attorney Thomas Moore (standing) of the law firm Kramer, Dillof, Livingston & Moore, delivers his summation to the jury in the medical malpractice trial Henry Williams v. NYC Health & Hospitals Corp. The city Health and Hospitals Corporation is represented by Daniel Federico (seated, right) of the law firm DeCorato Cohen Sheehan & Federico. Marlin Cassidy (seated, left) transcribed the proceedings.
The plaintiff’s daughter was a 28-year-old adult in May 2011 with cognitive difficulties — she was mobile but could not communicate verbally. The plaintiff’s claims stem from after she suffered a fall at home for which she received emergency hospital care, including a cat scan, and was discharged after doctors ruled out head and spinal cord injury. However, she remained paralyzed, and it was subsequently discovered that she suffered from spinal cord compression.
Moore asked for $50 million in compensation for his plaintiff, which included past and future pain and suffering and loss of enjoyment of life. While the facts of the case were contested, they were not decided. Four days after the jury began deliberations, the trial was settled this week in Kings County Civil Term for an undisclosed sum.
