Montague Street anchor away, but maybe not for long

If you walked on Montague Street between Hicks Street and Montague Terrace/Pierrepont Place on Saturday, you may have noticed that the large iron anchor, a fixture in front of 76 Montague St. since 1981, is gone.

At 6:30 that morning, it was loaded onto a truck trailer for a journey to a shipyard on Staten Island. The owner of the yard has graciously agreed to store the anchor for free until a new permanent site can be found for it. As the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported earlier, Friend of a Farmer, the restaurant moving into 76 Montague St., which needed the space occupied by the anchor for outdoor seating, has kindly offered to provide refreshments at a “farewell to the anchor” party, which will serve as an opportunity to raise funds to defray the cost of transporting the anchor back and installing it in a new location in Brooklyn Heights, likely on the Promenade.
