As the Brooklyn Heights Garden Club celebrates its 75th anniversary, its motto reflects its continuous purpose since 1940: “Everyone’s a winner when Brooklyn blooms.”

Garden Club Vice President Leslie Hannafey is reviving an event the club held 10 years ago along with co-chair Judy Scofield Miller. The Window Box Contest is open to anyone in Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill, whether they have a lavish garden or simply have their favorite plants in containers, and entry is free.

Applicants can choose to have window boxes, container gardens, tree beds, front gardens or all of the above submitted for judging. The Brooklyn Eagle and Brooklyn Heights Press will award the two winners of the window box competition with $100 gift cards to the flower shop of their choice.

There are two separate categories for those who enter: “I Did It Myself” and “A Professional Helped Me,” since the contest welcomes both those who love to garden themselves and those who do not have time but enjoy a lovely yard all the same.

“The real interest is people who enjoy doing things with flowers and learning more about them,” Hannafey said. “We’re just very happy when people participate.”

With about 75 members (some of whom have been involved for 40 years), there has been a long line of promoting “civic beautification” and education from the garden club. After Superstorm Sandy, the group raised $2,500 for a community garden farm in Red Hook to plant blueberries and revive damaged soil in the borough.

This year, the group will donate a bench to be placed on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and provide books for children to help them learn gardening skills and develop interest in planting.

The deadline to enter the Window Box Contest is June 1. Forms can be picked up at James Weir Florist (155 Montague St.), Seaport Flowers (309 Henry St.), Floral Heights (107 Atlantic Ave.) and the Brooklyn Women’s Exchange (55 Pierrepont St.).

Judging will take place June 2, and winners will be announced June 4. For more details, email [email protected]
