The City Council has introduced a bill that would require emergency buttons in all New York City taxis.

If the legislation is adopted it would cover yellow, green and livery cabs.

The panic button would send an electronic signal directly to police precincts.

The bill was sponsored by Councilmembers Ydanis Rodriguez and Laurie Cumbo. It was prompted by the rape of a passenger in a green cab earlier this year.

The bill is still in the beginning stages.

Taxi drivers have a button that activates a distress light on the outside of the cab if they are being robbed or threatened.
