On Monday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams hosted a mission of elected officials and political leaders from Johannesburg to share best practices in municipal governance and to build the foundation for potential future partnerships between the borough and South Africa’s largest city. Led by Johannesburg City Council Speaker Constance Bontle Bapela, the delegation met with leadership from Brooklyn Borough Hall to learn about elements of New York City government, including community boards and the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP). They also received a tour of Brooklyn Borough Hall from Brooklyn Borough Historian Ron Schweiger and a tour of City Hall from New York City Council staff, where they also had the opportunity to briefly meet Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.

“I am honored to have hosted a distinguished group of leaders from Johannesburg at Brooklyn Borough Hall, advancing the ties between Brooklynites and the people of South Africa,” said Borough President Adams. “Our governments have much to learn from one another, and the dialogue we shared will improve the service we provide to our respective constituents. From the food at Madiba to the art at MoCADA, South African culture has a strong foothold in our borough, enriching the Brooklyn fusion that is second-to-none. I look forward to furthering our great relationship in the years ahead.”

“We are on an exchange program with the borough of Brooklyn as the City of Johannesburg Programming Committee to learn best practices in terms of governance and oversight,” said Speaker Bapela. “The experience has been insightful and extremely beneficial, and we hope to emulate some of these practices back home in Johannesburg.”
