ON THIS DAY in 1907, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Ran to Tell the Police He Had Killed a Woman.” The article focused on a woman being hit by car. The motorman left the mutilated, but still living body under the car wheels as he ran to get help.

“Mrs. Ella Cassidy, aged 37 years, who said she was a nurse in the Kings County Hospital, was knocked down and run over by Bergen Street car No. 3128 on Adams Street…” the Eagle reported.

TODAY IS NATIONAL BEER DAY. On this day in 1933, the Cullen-Harrison Act went into effect, meaning thirsty customers could buy beer that was 3.2 percent alcohol. The public lined up on “New Beer’s Eve” at breweries in 20 states and purchased 1.5 million barrels.
