ANTARCTICA — Extreme Swimmer Moves Past Slab of Ice: In this February photo, provided by 5 Swims Expedition, Lewis Pugh of the United Kingdom swims past a floating slab of ice in the Ross Sea in Antarctica. An extreme swimmer from Britain, Pugh completed the last of four swims in the ocean near Antarctica this month, including two that were further south than anybody had ever swum before.

NORTH CAROLINA — Alpacas Dash Toward Barn: A few of the Alpacas at the Celestine Ridge Alpacas run toward the barn as the owner brings fresh hay out to them north of Farmville on Wednesday.

INDIA — Boy Cools Off During Heat Wave: An Indian boy takes a bath under a roadside public water supply tap on a hot afternoon in the eastern Indian city of Bhubaneswar on Friday. Heat wave conditions prevailed as temperature rises in costal parts of eastern India.

CONNECTICUT — Woman Releases Juvenile Hawk: Maggie Jones, executive director of the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center in Stonington, releases a juvenile red shouldered hawk into the woods at the nature center on Thursday. The hawk was found several weeks ago outside one of the center’s raptor enclosures weak and emaciated. The center’s staff and volunteers nursed the hawk back to health allowed for Thursday’s release.
