ON THIS DAY in 1909, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Would Cost Too Much to Fumigate School 119.”

The article focused on the Health Department denying an application to fumigate a school even after citing scarlet fever instances.

“Residents of the thirty-second Ward have become worried over what is declared to be an unusual prevalence of scarlet fever in that vicinity,” the Eagle reported. “Application was made to the DOH to have the school building fumigated, but the question of cost caused the DOH to hesitate…”
