Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6 lawsuit on hold pending talks

A court hearing about a controversial proposal to build residential towers at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, scheduled for March 11, has been postponed for two months to allow the park’s board and litigants the opportunity to discuss the “possibility of resolving the litigation,” according to the advocacy group suing the park, People for Green Space Foundation (PFGSF).

Lori Schomp, spokesperson for PFGSF and the affiliated group Save Pier 6, said the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation (BBPC) “has asked for this long adjournment to engage in meaningful discussions regarding the future of Brooklyn Bridge Park.”

Brooklyn Bridge Park declined to comment.

A temporary restraining order, which prevents the park from moving forward on two residential towers planned for the southern end of the park near Atlantic Avenue, has been extended until May 12.

The PFGSF lawsuit was filed in the courts on July 18, 2014.

Schomp said community members had concerns regarding “the Park Corporation’s lack of transparency, school overcrowding, traffic safety … flood zones issues at Pier 6, and the challenges to placing luxury condos in a public park.”

Brooklyn Bridge Park officials have maintained that the residential and commercial developments in the park are necessary in order to fund its operations and maintenance, and say that they have been completely transparent with financials.
