ON THIS DAY in 1904, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Ran Away to Seek Mamma, But Nurse Got Loughton.”

The article focused on a custody battle.

“Loughton Thayer Smith, the 8-year-old boy over whose custody Arthur L. J. Smith and Mrs. Florence Thayer Smith have engaged in a bitter contest in the Supreme Court in Brooklyn, and who was awarded to the custody of the father pending the trial of the mother’s action for divorce, ran away from his father’s house …” the Eagle reported.
