Author Sandra Newman transports readers into a dystopian world in her newest work “The Country of Ice Cream Star,” which will be released on Feb. 10 and has been described as “unbearably beautiful.”
Set 80 years in the future in an America devastated and depopulated by a plague, Newman creates “an unforgettable heroine” in a bold 15-year-old old who embarks on a dangerous journey to save her brother in a world where all people die by age 18 or 19.
“I don’t remember how I came up with the idea of a future in which people die when they are teenagers, but once I had that idea, the rest followed naturally,” Newman said, referring to the genesis of the book.
“The Country of Ice Cream Star” will be featured in Brooklyn at Greenlight Bookstore on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Newman will appear in conversation with Emily St. John Mandel, author of The New York Times bestseller “Station Eleven.” Greenlight Bookstore is located at 686 Fulton St. in Fort Greene.
