ON THIS DAY in 1911, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Millionaire Arnold Asked to Pay $5,000 for Missing Daughter.” The article focused on a “rich perfumery man” receiving a letter demanding ransom for in exchange for returning his daughter.

“A faint ray of hope came to-day to the parents of the missing Dorothy Arnold, daughter of Francis Arnold, the millionaire perfumery manufacturer,” the Eagle reported.  “Sandwiched in among the many letters which the letter carrier took to the City Hall to-day was one addressed to Mr. Arnold.”
